How to make your eco-friendly stamp
on Australia’s famous coffee culture

It’s 5.30 am on a Monday morning.

Sydney cafe-owner, Jun, opens shop, brews his first-morning perk and sits outside as the first rays of sun twinkle down the Llankelly Place laneway in Potts Point.

It’s that still, quiet moment in time before the world launches into action.

“There’s something special about that early morning time. No one’s around. Sitting at the cafe and sipping my coffee. Wondering what the day will bring”, says Jun, owner of Oracle Cafe.

That’s the thing about coffee. It opens up possibilities.

“Then the customers come and you get to hear their stories. Some people come with their problems, their daily troubles. Others come and share the good news. But it’s all good. We work it out together.”

“It’s the sharing stories that I love the most”.

We’ve come a long way since the days of simply refuelling with instant coffee. Now coffee is an art form, something to be savoured.

“Let’s grab a coffee”

For many of us, coffee is the first thing we think of when we wake in the morning.

It’s straight to the cafe for a morning brew.

But for Australians, coffee is more than just a power-up for the day. It’s a way of life.

As we head to our local cafe, it’s often not just the caffeine fix we crave. It’s the connection. The lineup at the coffee shop inevitably ends up in conversation.

Jokes are spun.

Problems worked out.

New friendships formed.

Ideas are sparked.

Stories shared.

It’s a moment away from the hustle to debrief, regroup, find our common ground,

THE AGE OF COFFEE

In a land colonised by tea lovers, it’s interesting that coffee has become such a big part of our culture here.

But it didn’t take long for us to get hooked. In the wake of World War II, Italian immigrants started bringing their beloved coffee machines to Australia. The nutty, smoky aroma wafted under our nostrils and our love for the brew began.

The introduction of espresso coffee changed everything. It was a huge step forward for the flavour of coffee.

Espresso bars started popping up all over Sydney and Melbourne providing a refreshing change from the usual pub outings and milk bars.

"The introduction of espresso coffee … is nostalgically remembered by many as a key watershed between a drab past and a cosmopolitan present," historian Andrew May says. (ABC News)

From the year 2000, a cosmopolitan cafe lifestyle began to spread across the country like vegemite over a well-buttered piece of toast.

The Mediterranean values of pleasure, family and food worked well in Australia. Coffee and brekky on a Saturday morning became the thing to do to exhale after a long and stressful week.

It all blended perfectly with our sandy, surfy, sunkissed lifestyle. A little bit of chic with a little bit of surf.

We now live in a world moving at breakneck speed. Easy access to everything at our scrolling fingertips means we can get more done while we clutch at our coffee cups. It’s all very convenient but this convenience means we’ve become addicted to a throwaway culture.

Takeaway coffee cups are everywhere. Crammed into bins, rolling down roads, scattered across beaches, floating up to shore.

According to estimates, Australians use 1 billion disposable coffee cups every year.

“Coffee cups are estimated to be the second-largest contributor to litter waste after plastic bottles.” (ABC News)
