In Australia, any lined paper cup cannot directly go into general co-mingled recycling bins as they will be discarded at the MRF’s (material recovery facilities) and end up in landfill. This is due to the inability for waste processors to ascertain which type of lined paper cup it is.

However, Truly Eco cups are recyclable when collected as a clean stream of only Truly Eco cups and accepted by industrial paper recovery companies.

We have successfully recycled the post-consumer Truly Eco cups in Australia but best practice to recycle or compost depends on the volume of cups collected and proximity to paper recovery companies or industrial Composters that will accept the material. Please contact your Truly Eco provider to discuss recycling options.

Like the recovery of any waste material, the Truly Eco cups can be composted if collected as only this material and either home composted or sent to an industrial composting facility. Our Truly Eco cup has the NF T51-800:2015 Home and Garden European Certification and will shortly have certification to AS5810 and AS4736.

As pioneers of the first Aqueous coated cups in Australia, we introduced Truly Eco with the Plastic Free Global Certification from Control Union. The plastic free term is still widely used throughout the world and also here in Australia.

The international certifying body of this standard Control Union has since reviewed the “plastic free” process and changes have been made to include a new, but yet to be determined criteria on the certification. We therefore have decided to remove this certification from our cups until there is more clarity from the certifying bodies.
